Autotroph – They generate their own ‘food’ using energy from the sun via photosynthesis.
Process of photosynthesis
- Leaves of the plant make glucose from CO2 and H2o, using light energy from the sun
- Light energy is captured by green pigments known as chlorophyll, in chloroplasts of plant leaves, converting the chemical energy into glucose.
- Oxygen is produced as a waste product.
– When a ray of light is absorbed by a chloroplast, chlorophyll traps it’s energy, using the power to split water molecules. Enzymes catalyse the reaction of photosynthesis, using CO2. This later leads to the formation of glucose, oxygen as a waste product.
