2.17 describe the process of photosynthesis and understand its importance in the conversion of light energy to chemical energy

Autotroph – They generate their own ‘food’ using energy from the sun via photosynthesis.

Process of photosynthesis

  1. Leaves of the plant make glucose from CO2 and H2o, using light energy from the sun
  2. Light energy is captured by green pigments known as chlorophyll, in chloroplasts of plant leaves, converting the chemical energy into glucose.
  3. Oxygen is produced as a waste product.

– When a ray of light is absorbed by a chloroplast, chlorophyll traps it’s energy, using the power to split water molecules. Enzymes catalyse the reaction of photosynthesis, using CO2. This later leads to the formation of glucose, oxygen as a waste product.
