5.2 Understand the effects on crop yield of increased carbon dioxide and increased temperature in glasshouses

Increased Carbon Dioxide

  • CO2 is a required reactant in photosynthesis
  • If there is an excess as opposed to too little, the plant can photosynthesise to the optimum rate
  • The more photosynthesis, the more glucose,
  • The more glucose, the more energy for growth
  • Increased crop yield!

Increased temperature

  • Temperature positively affects the enzymes needed for photosynthesis
  • As it gives more kinetic energy for the enzymes to move, therefore more heat = higher crop yield.
