4.3 explain how quadrats can be used to sample the distribution of organisms in their habitats.

  1. A sample square is taken at random
  2. The number of a population in that square is taken
  3. This is repeated in different areas
  4. Used to show where population is dense and where it is not
  • Quadrats should be placed randomly so that a representative sample is taken
  • You should look at results from several quadrats in the area – this reduces the effect of unusual distribution
  • Results are more reliable as you look at more quadrat samples
