4.11 understand the biological consequences of pollution of air by sulfur dioxide and by carbon monoxide

Sulfur dioxide –

  • Source: fossil fuel burning
  • Combines with rain water to form dilute sulfuric acid – this creates acid rain, killing plants, animals, marine life (marine life that can only survive in rivers with specific pHs) and damages buildings

Carbon monoxide –

  • Source: When fuels are burned without enough oxygen
  • It affects human red blood cells haemoglobin as it combines with in and can kill people if the blood becomes too saturated with the gas
