2.79 understand that a coordinated response requires a stimulus, a receptor and an effector

  • Stimuli/stimulus  – A thing or event that provokes a reaction eg. light reflecting off a pen into the eye
  • Receptor  – Group of cells that detect the stimuli in sense organs (eyes, sight. nose, smell. ears, sound. tongue, taste. skin, touch)
  • Effector  – The cells that coordinate a response to the stimuli
  • This is also known as the 3 main stages of the reflex arc
  • It usually deals with the nerves, but sometimes with the hormonal system (sometimes both)
