2.69 understand how the kidney carries out its roles of excretion and osmoregulation

Excretion  – removal of waste products

  • Amino acids contain nitrogen, which the liver converts to urea
  • Kidneys filter urea from the blood stream, combining it with water
  • This creates more heavily concentrated urine (ADH release)

Osmoregulation – Control and regulation of the level of mineral ions and water

  • Kidneys react to the hypothalamus releasing ADH via the pituitary gland
