4.7 explain the role of convection in everyday phenomena

  • Convection is useful as it moves hot air upwards
  • Hot, less dense air produced by the radiator on the ground creates a current of cold air to be heated
  • Convection in gases – warm air rises as it is replaced by cooler, denser air around it.
  • Heated by the sun, less dense warm air rises above the equator, to be replaced by cooler, denser air towards the North and South

Land breezes –

  • Day: Land heats faster than water as it is less dense
  • The hot air rises to be replaced by cooler air from the water
  • Result: onshore sea breeze
  • Night: Land cools faster than water
  • Warm air from the water is replaced by cooler air
  • Result: Offshore wind (land breeze)
