2.25 describe the reactions of dilute hydrochloric and dilute sulfuric acids with magnesium, aluminium, zinc and iron

  • The following reactions are displacement reactions:
  • Metal + dilute hydrochloric acid –> metal chloride + hydrogen
  • Metal + sulfuric acid –> metal sulfide + hydrogen

Magnesium

  • Bubbles
  • Mg disappears
  • Reaction is exothermic (release of heat)
  • Colourless solution is formed

Aluminum

  • Bubbles form when heated
  • Colourless solution formed
  • Aluminum disappears

Zinc

  • Bubbles of gas
  • Colourless solution formed
  • Zinc disappears

Iron

  • Pale green solution formed
  • bubbles
  • Iron disappears
