2.9 understand how the functioning of enzymes can be affected by changes in temperature, including changes due to change in active site

Things that affect enzyme activity:

  • Temperature
  • pH
  • Enzyme concentration
  • Substance concentration
  • Surface area
  • Pressure

3 key words:

  • Optimum – the temperature and pH that the enzyme works best at
  • Denatured – when the temperature and pH changes to drastically that it alters the active site – the enzyme will no longer work.
  • Active site – the area of the enzyme (sort of like the key) that ‘unlocks’ the substrate (lock)
