2.3 explain the classification of elements as metals or non-metals on the basis of their electrical conductivity and the acid-base character of their oxides

Conductivity

  • Metals: all metals are conductors of electricity
  • Non metals: all non metals (with the exception of graphite) are not conductors, they are insulators

Acid-base character of their oxides

  • Metals: all metals form alkaline metal oxides (pH 7>)
  • Non metals: form an acidic metal oxide (pH >7)
