2.12 explain, in terms of dissociation, why hydrogen chloride is acidic in water but not in methylbenzene

  • Water = Polar molecule
  • Methylbenzene = Non polar molecule
  • Hydrogen chloride = Polar molecule 

Polars dissolve polars, therefore methylbenzene cannot be dissolved in water or hydrochloric acid
