2.25 recall the potential dangers of electrostatic charges, eg. when refuelling aircraft and tankers

  • Electric shocks – this can happen when cars become charged with static electricity and gives off the unpleasant shock feeling when the hand or part of the body comes into contact with the metal.
  • Fuelling tankers and aircraft – When fuelling, static may build up on planes and sparks may occur. If this happens, an explosion or fire may occur. Luckily, this problem is resolved by electronically earthing the vehicle
  • Handling microchips – Workers handling electronic components must take care not to be charged with static electricity in case they destroy expensive electrical components. This is prevented by wearing earthing straps
