Experiment to prove this:

  1. Get a polythene rod and rip up small pieces of paper. Try to pick the paper up.  At first, the rod will have no effect on the paper as there is no static charge.
  2. Rub the polythene rod with a cloth, and now the rod will attract the paper because the cloth has separated the charge.
